Ghana’s Stand-Up Comedy Better Than Before – KSM
Satirist Kwaku-Sintim Misa (KSM) has acknowledged that stand-up comedy in Ghana is better now than it was in the past.
In an interview with TV3, KSM noted that the current crop of comedians are doing better than his contemporaries did during his days.
“I'm very, very happy with the state of comedy. Now there is a whole variety of people and they are doing extremely well”, he said.
He cited Khemikal, James Brown, DKB, Augustin Dennis, Foster Romanus, OB and others as examples of comedians who are doing impressively well in the comedy industry.
“I think there has been much improvement from the days I was reigning to the days we actually have a whole multitude of comedians”, he added.
Talking about what to do to get comedy in Ghana to its highest height, he urged the comedians to work harder to stay relevant and be competitive.
KSM explained that when the comedians know their stuff and improve on their craft, it is easy for them to break through.
“The comedians should concentrate of their craft, I want them to improve on their craft, I want them to be very fluid and flow and once we have a body of comedians that know their art so well, that flow, that deliver, then we can get to the next step,” KSM said on TV3.
KSM as has produced and hosted big comedy shows including ‘The Saga of the Returnee,’ ‘Politically Incorrect’, ‘Afia Siribuor,’ among others.
His company, Sapphire Entertainment has produced a lot of television series and shows.
The latest production from the stables of his production company is an electronic court drama series, ‘Odo Wahala.’

Falz: Outpouring of Love for Falz in Abeokuta

POPULAR Nigerian entertainer, Falz, was stunned by the outpouring of emotions expressed by the students of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Ogun State on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 during the MTN Pulse Campus Invasion.
After three days of students pouring into the Sales Village at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic and the Federal University of Agriculture, both in Abeokuta where the events were  happening  simult-aneously, they moved to grounds outside the Iyalode Tinubu Girls Hostel in FUNAAB to await the entry of the surprise celebrity guest.
In the late afternoon, the Pulse Convertible entered the field with Falz and turned the calm crowd into ecstatic fans who gathered around the car in unbridled excitement. Falz couldn’t move from the car for almost 15 minutes as the excited fans refused to move away from the singer. "Shaku Shaku dance:" Peter Obi replies Osinbajo, calls for reflection

"Shaku Shaku dance:" Peter Obi replies Osinbajo, calls for reflection
by  Jerrywright Ukwu

- Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo's comments on learning the 'shaku shaku' dance has triggered a reaction from the opposition - PDP vice presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says this is not a time for dancing - Osinbajo had said he was learning the 'shaku shaku’ dance steps for campaigns ahead of the 2019 general elections The vice presidential candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP) and former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, has reacted to a comment attributed to Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, saying he was learning how to dance the popular 'shaku shaku' dance. Reacting to Osinbajo's comment on Monday, October 29, Obi who was returning from a trip to Dubai, said for Atiku team it is about, “spending our time with the best minds on how to start creating jobs and putting food on people’s table.” a letter from our Editor-in-Chief Bayo Olupohunda His words: “I have not had the opportunity of reading his comments as I haven’t seen the dailies. I know Vice President Osibanjo is a gentleman and may not have made such a comment. “However, why I am not against people dancing or learning how to dance 'shaku shaku,' as I believe it is one of those things that is keeping our people going on in this very difficult times, I believe that the crossroads that we have found ourselves in as a nation requires sober reflection. “For me in particular, this period calls for sober reflection not dancing or learning how to dance as there are many challenges facing our nation at the moment, not the least being recently having our country named the world headquarters of extreme poverty with over eighty seven million people. “Worse still millions more are losing their jobs, with four million by the third quarter of this year alone. “Millions of Nigerians go to bed hungry not knowing where the meal for the next day will come from, hundreds of thousands risk death by crossing the Sahara and the Mediterranean Sea to wherever they can make a living. “These and other challenges are indicative of the dire straits facing us as a nation today. And these are what we on the Atiku team are spending our time with the best minds on how to start creating jobs and putting food on people’s table.” Osinbajo had on Sunday, October 28, in Abuja, jocularly said he was learning the 'shaku shaku’ dance steps for campaigns ahead of the 2019 general elections.

2019: We are learning Shaku Shaku dance steps – Osinbajo

2019: We are learning Shaku Shaku dance steps – Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, on Sunday in Abuja,  jocularly said he was learning the `Shaku Shaku’ dance steps for campaigns ahead of the 2019 general elections.
`Shaku Shaku’ is a popular and contemporary dance style common among young Nigerians.
The vice president said that his friend recently polled large number of votes just by dancing.
Osinbajo, who was the Chairman and Special Guest of Honour at the `Launch of Five Fascinating Books’ written by Funmilayo Braithwaite, in Abuja on Sunday, said that his friend recently polled large number of votes just by dancing.
According to him, nobody knows what will work in Nigerian politics.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the books — The Path of Fate, Echoes of Yesteryears, Politicrisis, The Golden Rules and Bonds of Destiny– were unveiled at Transcorp Hilton Hotel.
The vice-president said that he believed that reading the books would provide resolutions to a lot of the questions that were raised in the lives of Nigerians and in the lives of children.
He said: “And hopefully, we will be able to find resolution to some of questions raised in our political lives as well; I know that is one of the reason Alhaji Shittu Kabir, Chairman, Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA) is here.
“As matter of fact, for those of us who are politicians, when you see `Politicrisis’; especially as elections approach, you might think there is a formula somewhere.
“Kabir and I and are the opposite sides but we are here to learn; I was saying the other day that politics in Nigeria is becoming very exciting; you never know what works.
“I can never forget my dear friend in one of the states who just danced his way through the campaigns; all he did was dance; he did nothing else but dance and he won 250,000 votes.
“So myself and Kabir are now learning Shaku Shaku; we have to learn; who knows what will win.’’
He lauded the author, saying she had very deep in reflecting on many of the difficult and wide range of issues.
According to Osinbajo, looking at what the author has done with the five books, it is very evident that a lot of her deep introspection has not left her.
He said that the author was constantly trying to answer the various questions of life.
The vice president said that some of the questions had to do with the value system in the society and how those values might appear to have collapsed over the years.
“When you look at the questions she raised about children; bringing up children bullying and all of that; children even been able to share their thoughts their visions with their parents.
“Going into `Politicrisis’ and all of that; you will find out that the issues are always the same; issues on integrity; how can we stand up for what we believe; competing and very difficult circumstances that we find ourselves.
“How can we truly be ourselves; how can we truly express ourselves? It is a sort of things that you hardly find these days.
“And, I am very pleased that despite all the challenges, Funmi continues to be the one doing a lot the thinking for us; a lot of the reflection for us; because society if guided by those who are able to think and reflect; those who are able to sit down and try to answer all these questions for us,’’ he said.
Osinbajo said he looked forward to seeing the books in private and public libraries across the country as well as in various ministries of education for distribution to children.(NAN)

Fela’s family applauds volunteering bands at Felabration

Fela’s family applauds volunteering bands at Felabration

On:  In: Entertainment
IT was a showing of love to fellow African artistes at Day 3 of Felabration at the New Afrika Shrine by members of the Fela Anikulapo-Kuti family as the former  took to the stage to fete them during the 21st edition of the annual festival.
It started with Fela’s daughter, Yeni Kuti, who dragged Siti and the Band from Zanzibar, Tanzania, back on stage after their performances, urging festival attendees to show them more love.
“These people came all the way from Tanzania by themselves,” Yeni who is also called YK told the audience. “Please show them love.”
Afterwards, the first son of the late Afrobeat founder, Femi Kuti, joined the Togo All Stars in a cameo. Armed with his Saxophone, Femi blew on his horns to the admiration of the band as well the enjoyment of the audience.
Soon after, when AK 47, a band which played two of Fela’s tracks – ‘Sorrow, Tears and Blood’ and ‘Why Black Man Dey Suffer’ came on stage, Femi’s son, Made, joined them. And like his father and grandfather, he demonstrated his dexterity with the Saxophone.
Other artistes that performed on Wednesday at the New Afrika Shrine included Po Bo from France, Fuji hip hop sensation Terry Akpala, CDQ, ‘Joromi’ crooner, Simi, and Timaya, among others.
Since it was inaugurated 21 years ago by Yeni Kuti to immortalise the memory of her father who died on August 2, 1997, Felabration, which has the New Afrika Shrine as its primary base, remains the biggest all-week Nigerian concert where both established and upcoming local and international bands perform free for Fela’s fans. The other notable venue in Lagos where Felabration was celebrated was at Freedom Park on Broad Street.
Felabration which officially began on October 15, 2018 will end on Sunday, October 21, 2018, featuring different activities such as Secondary School Debate competition, Fela Debates, Arts competition, Afrobics competition and Dance competition. This year, Yeni also announced that other segments are going to be introduced as Felabration is not all about music but also an avenue to push developmental initiatives which her father was passionate about.

STOUT BRAND SAYS FELA IS ‘THE LEGEND WE REMEMBER’

STOUT BRAND SAYS FELA IS ‘THE LEGEND WE REMEMBER’

For 21 years, the world has tried in different ways to celebrate the legacy of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
The annual celebration of the music icon and political activist called Felabration provides the opportunity for fans to review what he stood for, and how valid and relevant is ideologies have remained to the socio political life of the society.
As Felabration continues to bring to the fore, and teach people what the man stood for, by ensuring that we continue to fight the kind of battles he fought in largely better ways,
To underscore this feat, Nigerian Breweries Plc, through one of its brands, Legend Extra Stout have identified with the legendary personae of Fela, and has joined sponsors of the iconic event, believing that by all ramifications, Felabration has become the most widely accepted of these platforms for celebrating all the great things that Fela stood for in the music industry.
“The music fiesta brings back memories of a man with folded fists in the air, in bare torso, a partly painted face and signature tight trousers. Characteristic of the man, Fela, he greets a cheering crowd eager to hear him sing and have his queens move their energetic melanin bodies to the sound of his band. The crowd continues to cheer as he sings, and swings his body to different sides while stamping his left foot in rhythmic fashion, but those who know these stuff of Legends know that in those lyrics are clear messages for the people who need to hear them; “the brevity of a man willing to tell his story in its truest form and have fun while at it – that’s the man Fela was; that’s the Legend we remember,” say the brand promoters.
Felabration was initiated by Yeni Kuti, Fela’s first child, in 1998, a year after his death, to get the world closer to the Fela spirit. This annual music festival runs for a week with different events from the concert to the dance and symposium. As the years go by, the festival features a different theme and continues to grow with more licenses signed across the world by fans of Afrobeats and those who truly believe in who and what Fela was.
In the week of Fela’s birthday, which is when the festival is usually held, people will gather under the theme “Overtaking, Overtake”, a line coined from the 1990 hit ODOO – Overtake Don Overtake Overtake.
This year, Legend Extra Stout brings excitement to the New Afrika Shrine and every other location in Lagos where people will gather not only to celebrate another edition of Felabration but Fela’s 80th birthday. For Legend, this is more than just an event sponsorship but an expression of the brand’s DNA and core values, which they say include, Authenticity, Courage and Freedom.
Felabration provides the perfect opportunity for the brand to connect with young vibrant Nigerians who believe and have the courage to express their real selves.
From October 15th until the 21st, fans will have the privilege to enjoy the rich taste of Legend Extra Stout as they celebrate Afrobeat and reminisce the stories Fela told in his days and how they are still relevant in today’s world.
Over the years, Legend Extra Stout has brought fanfare to music lovers with previous editions of Felabration and the Real Deal Experience. Fun seekers coming to celebrate the Afrobeat king can do so in a relaxed environment where they can feel the richness of the Nigerian music and the amazing taste that Legend Extra Stout brings. Fela is a legend and will always be celebrated as one.
Fans are expected in Lagos from around the world to honour the marks Fela made in the world music scene, as well as the inspiration he has given to younger talents coming out from Africa. In July, French President, Emmanuel Macron paid a visit to the Shrine to honour Fela, and there will be no surprise if he and other prominent persons like him join in the October celebrations, which will feature a symposium, debates, art exhibition, dance competition and a music concert.
Some of the acts who have performed at the music concert include Femi Kuti, Asa, King Sunny Ade, 2Baba Lucky Dube, Nneka, Awilo Longomba, Lagbaja, Wizkid, Burna Boy and many more. A lot of fans will be looking out for moments like Wizkid’s electric performance with Femi Kuti in 2017.
